The Volkswagen ID.5 electric “coupe” SUV could be launched as early as 2021.
The newly launched Volkswagen ID.4 is the first SUV in the manufacturer’s ID. electric range, and the first model in this family destined for an international career. A “coupé” variant of the ID.4 is expected. In terms of design, it should be closer to the ID concept car. Crozz concept car (photo) than the ID.4 is.
This model should be named ID.5. In contrast to ID.4, it would be reserved for the European market according to the German publication Automobilwoche, which states that Thomas Ulbrich, head of electric mobility at Volkswagen, holds this information.
Robust and dynamic
Measuring 4.58 m long, 1.85 m wide and 1.61 m high, it has a robust and dynamic style characterized by flowing lines, 21 cm ground clearance, broad shoulders and a high beltline, among other features.
It has no front grille, but its front end is more particularly equipped with headlamps that are connected to each other by a luminous edging. The rear end follows the same recipe to give an impression of width and seat the vehicle on the road. Still on the optical side, the ID.4 is equipped at the front with the IQ.Light Matrix LED lighting system (optional), for intelligent high beam control, and at the rear with the new 3D LED technology (also optional), “for extremely homogeneous light”.
A techno SUV
On board, technology is once again the keyword, with a digital handset, a large central touch screen of up to 12 inches with voice command (Android Auto, Apple Car Play and Mirror Link compatibility) and an augmented reality head-up display. From a design point of view, the whole is rather sober and uncluttered, thanks in particular to the absence of physical buttons.
Volkswagen hasn’t forgotten its roominess, with a generous wheelbase announced at 2.77 m. The trunk volume is 543 liters, or even 1,575 liters with the rear seats folded down.
A technical data sheet that you can guess
The Volkswagen ID.5 is expected to incorporate almost all the technical elements of the ID.4, starting with the modular SEM platform, the 204hp rear electric motor and a choice of three battery capacities. For both models, more powerful variants with all-wheel drive thanks to the installation of an electric motor at the front should soon be added to the range.
Due to the tilt of its rear pillars, the ID.5 should logically have less rear headroom and trunk space than the ID.4. The ID.5 is expected to hit the market in 2021.
